I was just thinking about how to model "calm in emergencies, even though freaks out other times." And I got this image of a fun bit for a character. . .

Unfazeable (Emergencies Only, -30%) -- 11 points
Danger Sense -- 15 points
Quirk: hates scary movies, bungee jumping, roller coasters, etc, and screams like a little kid and has nightmares if actually goes to one.

I just had this image of this character being forced to go through a carnival haunted house or something like that by his friends and party members, and, all of a sudden, becoming totally calm. And the other characters noticing this and freaking out -- because if THIS character is calm, it means that there's some sort of ACTUAL danger around. . .

Um, that's me.

I hate being easily quantifiable.

Do you have the psychic power of actually knowing when there is REAL danger around? I just had this image of this character walking through a haunted house where there was a GENUINE maniacal killer, ignoring all the fake ones, and calmly beating the crap out of the real one, and then freaking out because, well, now the REAL danger was dealt with, so all these stupid glow-in-the-dark ghosts were NOW scary.

You'd have to ask Ranj (or, as I'm currently calling him, [Bad username in LJ tag]) about that, I guess. Although I do have a bit of it, but not for maniacal killers (that I know of). I get it from my dad--the ability to know when things are about to go really freaky and pilot your way through it with a minimum of damage. Human-wise, though, people don't tend to fuck with me.

Hunh. That's a very useful characteristic for adventurer-types. And you've also got the classic languages background.

Tell me, have you considered a rewarding and exciting career in the challenging field of tomb raiding?

I was thinking that if the teaching thing fell through, the CIA might want me. ;)

The thing I lack for a successful entry into tomb raiding is that whole aristocratic-papa, independently-wealthy thing, I suspect.

You could be a teacher *and* a tomb raider.

::has watched the Indiana Jones films far too many times::

other items I would throw into that mix:

Blessed (abilities useful only in situation of immediate physical danger)
-Unfazeable
-Fearlessness
-danger sense
-combat reflexes

quirks sound good as real full blown phobias would probably still apply even as the 'Blessed' items kick in

Fearlessness is not necessary when you've got Unfazeable. Fearlessness gives you a bonus to Fright Checks -- Unfazeable means that you just never even have to make Fright Checks in the first place.

I was under the impression that 'unfazeable' was for any and all 'standard' fright checks. Scary stuff, etc. The 'fearlessness' would be for things like psionics, magical, atemi or other meta abilities that still require a fright check roll even if the person is not afraid. You could be right tho, my books are still packed up from the move.
