Just got the call back from the garage. "I'm really sorry. This is the hardest call I ever have to make. But, we've really looked at your car, and we just don't think we should do anything to it."

The list of things that are wrong with it is long. Nothing dangerous -- the one system that works fine is the brakes. The car's not going to kill us. But it is likely to strand us somewhere. Everything that can leak is leaking, everything that can corrode is corroded. They don't know what shape the battery is in because the wires to it are corroded enough that they can't get good data. It goes on like that.

Let's put it this way. Bruce wants us to keep the loaner car for the weekend, because he doesn't want us driving up to Vermont in our car.

So, now we're looking at craigslist and trying to decide what kind of car (i.e. what price point and condition) we're looking for. We could get a 1994 Ford Crown Victoria Police Special for $2000!

your garage sounds cool. i'm looking for one (need to get inspected, a possible windshield, and later on i'll need oil changes and the like).

who do you go to? the kind of garage that would make that kind of call, and still let you borrow the loaner is the kind of garage i want to give my business to.

The Tremont Street Garage in Melrose. Used to be called "Rick White's Tremont Street Garage", but Rick's gone, and Bruce is running it now.

*plays taps for the car*

Your garage rocks, not that you don't know that.

Sounds like, to extend what you were saying earlier, that while this sort of car doesn't die, yours is somewhat trying to fade away....

And I do offer my condolences, and my good wishes for finding a replacement that will serve you well.

My condolences. I know it's tough to lose a car. I'm still trying to sell mine, which is also tough. It feels like I'm losing a pet, and I'm choosing to give her up for adoption.

"It's got a cop motor, a four hundred and forty cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks; it was a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. Whaddya say? Is it the new Bluesmobile or what?"

"...Fix the cigarette lighter."

If you are serious about the Crown Vic find out what
size the gas tank is. Many cop cars only have 10 Gal.

Many of the "police package" or "P71" Crown Vics have been subject to severe abuse as taxis.

Also check for the string "P71" in the VIN; that's the sign that it's a real police package Crown Vic, as opposed to an impostor with hubcaps and fat tires.

If you're going to look at used cop cars, though, get one of the old 9C1 Chevy Impalas (aka "Shamu the Whale" style) with the LT-1 350 V8 engine. Much better top speed and all around a better-built car. Lots of departments are desperately trying to keep them on the road because they're so good, and they like the phat engine for pursuit work.

[livejournal.com profile] chaiya is selling her Saturn on craigslist; there's a link in her journal. If it weren't a manual transmission, I'd be quite tempted.

I'm sorry the old faithful car is kaput. :(

If you want I can put out the feelers for a car for you. The car that me and M are driving is a 92 olds that, well when we got it, only had 48,000 on it and it only cost 2500. My dad lives 50% of the year in FL and a lot of "older" people sell cars down there for cheap money.

Thanks -- Lis's folks live in Clearwater. We tend to get our cars at one of the auctions down there.
