Well, that's disappointing. . .
Jun. 20th, 2003 11:42 amJust got the call back from the garage. "I'm really sorry. This is the hardest call I ever have to make. But, we've really looked at your car, and we just don't think we should do anything to it."
The list of things that are wrong with it is long. Nothing dangerous -- the one system that works fine is the brakes. The car's not going to kill us. But it is likely to strand us somewhere. Everything that can leak is leaking, everything that can corrode is corroded. They don't know what shape the battery is in because the wires to it are corroded enough that they can't get good data. It goes on like that.
Let's put it this way. Bruce wants us to keep the loaner car for the weekend, because he doesn't want us driving up to Vermont in our car.
So, now we're looking at craigslist and trying to decide what kind of car (i.e. what price point and condition) we're looking for. We could get a 1994 Ford Crown Victoria Police Special for $2000!

"...Fix the cigarette lighter."

Date: 2003-06-20 11:39 am (UTC)size the gas tank is. Many cop cars only have 10 Gal.

Date: 2003-06-20 12:08 pm (UTC)Also check for the string "P71" in the VIN; that's the sign that it's a real police package Crown Vic, as opposed to an impostor with hubcaps and fat tires.
If you're going to look at used cop cars, though, get one of the old 9C1 Chevy Impalas (aka "Shamu the Whale" style) with the LT-1 350 V8 engine. Much better top speed and all around a better-built car. Lots of departments are desperately trying to keep them on the road because they're so good, and they like the phat engine for pursuit work.
