Tom Smith just said on his LJ that Robert Asprin, author of the Myth Adventures and Phule's Company books, as well as others, died suddenly this morning.

Another blogger has it:
May 22
R.I.P. Robert Asprin

I only encountered him personally once, on a panel the first time I attended a con (Dragon Con, 1988 or so?). I thought he was an arrogant jerk. I’ve heard from others that he could be quite nice, so maybe it was some kind of schtick. I did enjoy all the Thieves World books, despite their unrelenting darkness.

He was scheduled to be at MarCon this weekend, so it seems his death was sudden and unexpected. I wish the best to his family and friends.

Fuck.

Yeah, and it's been added to his Wikipedia entry, FWIW.

It's very sad. I've been reading his books for a long time, and they always made me laugh.

Per Kevin Standlee, who with Asprin is/was a GOH at Marcon this weekend, the con chair's saying he died of a massive heart attack.

Tom and Bob were friends for many years, so he seems like a reliable source. May Bob rest in peace. I hope his family finds comfort in their grief. Bob had a tremendous influence on Michigan fandom, especially when I was just starting out (15-20 years ago). He seemed larger than life. The comments on Tom's LJ are starting to look like a wake, as people gather to remember. (I've never seen Tullamore Dew at a shiva.) I'm not sure if that will be the central gathering, but it might be.

Apparently, sadly, it is true.

He was on the list of people I really wanted to meet some day, and now it is too late. But his books got me through some very dark days.
