Dressage

From [livejournal.com profile] trcabbage.

Wow. If you like horses, you may already have seen this. If you aren't horsey, then you'll STILL be totally amazed by this.

Yeah. I've never seen dressage before, but from the comments on Tobie's journal, I get the impression that this was a PARTICULARLY impressive example thereof. . .

Just from the commentator: "Oh, there's a mistake -- that's the first mistake he's made -- oh, who cares, it's been a privilege just to watch this horse" is not something I usually expect to hear.

She's magnificent!

What a dancer! I've seen films of Lipizzaners, and I've never seen anything as lovely as that. She's a once-in-a-lifetime horse.

Well, *I* was clapping along in my seat...

[identity profile] the-editor.livejournal.com 2007-04-13 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
it WAS impressive!

although I was hoping for a finale that included a full swan dive into a vat of hot oil.

*THAT* would sure wow 'em!

Probably the first time ever that I have burst into sponateous applause at the end of a youtube video. That was amazing - thanks for posting.

I first saw it a couple of weeks ago, just after the event. It's great to see it again. What really gets me is that at about a minute left to go, you can see the horse's tail actually keeping time to the beat. I can barely comprehend how one could guide a horse through all the dressage steps, but how the heck can you teach him to keep time with his tail?? Wow!

[identity profile] xiphias.livejournal.com 2007-04-13 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
If I had to guess, I'd guess that you DON'T teach that. I'd guess that the horse is just doing that because she's having so much fun and getting into the music.

I mean, doesn't that look like both the horse and the human members of the team are enjoying the hell out of themselves?

[identity profile] felis-sidus.livejournal.com 2007-04-14 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
They do indeed. And after all, my cats used to keep time to music with their tails, so there's no reason horses shouldn't be able to do the same. I never did see my cats dance, though.

That was fantastic.
I had the impression the horse was really enjoying it too... always a great thing to see!
Thanks very much for sharing.

I didn't know that horses could dance! I have never seen dressage before. This clip makes me want to know more. Can any horse learn to dance, or are some more apt to want to learn than others? What kind of training do they get? What are the signals that the rider gives to change the steps? I'm fascinated.
