I'll just put the cut right up here so that I don't accidentally leave it out.

Okay. So, we DID see this movie in one of the sneak previews, but it works a lot better with the right music and the print at the right light level and all.

One disappointment: that scene where River's hiding on the ceiling and two people walk under her -- in the sneak, they were talking to each other, and their dialogue was a direct quote from the dialogue that two stormtroopers were saying when Obi-Wan Kenobi was disabling the tractor beam. That was cut.

Anyway. . . we went with a group of friends, ([livejournal.com profile] vonbeck, [livejournal.com profile] felis_sidus, [livejournal.com profile] rebmommy, my father who doesn't have an LJ, [livejournal.com profile] cheshyre, and me -- [livejournal.com profile] browngirl was supposed to meet us, but was eaten by the buses) partially because we didn't want them to have to deal with Wash's death without friends around them. But mainly because we like our friends and like hanging out with them.

Mom/[livejournal.com profile] rebmommy made an interesting observation, which was that what happened on Miranda was massive imbalance of the yetzer ha-ra -- with no yetzer ha-ra ("the evil impulse"), what happens is precisely what happened to 99.9% of the population -- they just laid down and died, for not wanting to bother feeding themselves or anything. What happened to the other 0.1% that became Reavers -- that's what happens when you have absolutely no yetzer ha-tov and have ONLY yetzer ha-ra.

Hey, thanks for the update -- I was wondering about differences between the previewed and screened versions. (I never made it to any of the previews.)

Awesome!!!

And thanks for the warning from way-back. I knew something bad was coming, so I was a wee bit prepared for it.

This is not the kind of movie I would usually choose to see on my own - I'm a musical comedy and chick flick kind of person. Throw in some old black-and-white murder mysteries and a few screwball comedies, and I am in movie heaven. I usually stay away from movies with violence, too much suspense and heart-throbbing scariness, a lot of blood. Having said all this, I now have to tell you that I loved "Serenity". The sets, costumes, and makeup looked very real. The visual effects were stunning and didn't take you out of the story at all. I loved the character of River - the young actress who played her was very, very good. [livejournal.com profile] cheshyre tells me that this is her first major movie role. She was very good as the mentally unstable psychic, sometimes fierce and sometimes sensitive. She had a range of emotions to play, and was believable in the quick emotional changes. Besides, she is very beautiful and a delight to watch. She moves gracefully - was a ballerina in an earlier career, I believe - and has the most wondrous face, very expressive. Even in rags, hair bedraggled, face scratched and bloody, with wild eyes - she is sublimely beautiful. Go see the movie while it is on the big screen, if only to see her face and giant eyes fill the space. I thoroughly enjoyed "Serenity" and recommend it highly.

meep.

I always, always read spoiler cuts for just this reason. Knowing important plot points doesn't prevent me from enjoying a book/movie/show later. And sometimes it prevents me from freaking out and missing a good 15 minutes of the movie because I'm going "No, that didn't just happen. That did not just happen."
