We saw Eighties movies at the Brattle
Dec. 18th, 2002 12:50 amSo, we screwed up on meeting
teddywolf to see movies, but other than that, it was good.
The Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square does $8 double-features. Tonight, it was an Eighties Dada fairy-godmother-of-sex story followed by the best geek film ever.
Weird Science was enjoyable enough, I guess, but I think it would have been better had it had a plot, characters, or coherence. Or maybe even several of the above. It had some good lines: best line, as a post-holocaust mutant biker leaves a party after terrorizing the party-goers: "Could we just keep this between us? I don't want to lose my teaching job. . . ." The "perfect woman" character was moderately sexy, I guess. And it does have a fantastic theme song by Oingo Boingo. I'd never seen it before, and I doubt I'll go out of my way to see it again.
Real Genius, on the other hand, is one of my favorite movies of all time. This is the second time I've seen it on the big screen, and it works even better big than it does on video. And it's got JORDAN!!!! Yaaay!
After the movie, we chatted with some of the people who'd been sitting around us, and I made the comment that, growing up, I had the hugest crush on Jordan, and I promised myself I'd marry her when I grew up.
So I did.
One person made the comment that he'd never realized that Alyssa Hannigan was just a second-rate knock-off. . . .
Let's face it. Jordan is about a quadrillion times sexier than the character "Lisa" from Weird Science.

Date: 2002-12-17 10:22 pm (UTC)Did you realize that the sex-pot "Can you hammer a whatever-inch spike through a board with your penis?" girl *and* the actress who played Jordan were both also in the movie "Valley Girl"? I'm just a font of 80's trivia. ;-)

Although I have to say that I think of your wife as being slightly less hyper than Jordan. And, even as a freshchunk, more social. But I see what you mean...

Date: 2002-12-18 09:07 am (UTC)At any rate, we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly -- would've been more fun to have you there, but we still had a great time.
Incidentally, though the spring calendar isn't yet up on their website, in January they're doing a weekend double-feature of Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man if you'd be interested in seeing that. [And I'm still trolling for a group outing to see Singin in the rain this week in one of the Arlington theaters.]

"Who is he?"
"Hollyfeld. He was a student here in the Seventies."
"Why does he keep going into our closet?"
"Why do YOU keep going into our closet?"
"To get my clothes. But that's not why HE keeps going into our closet."
"Of course not. He's twice your size. Your clothes would never fit him. Twenty points higher than me? Thinks a big guy like that could wear his clothes? Honestly, Mitch. Think before you ask these questions."
