Went to work tonight -- it is the only function all week. It was a get-together for a conference of trial lawyers. Turns out that this is an organization to which John Edwards belongs, so lots of people there knew him personally, and were happy about his veep nod.

As you know, Democrats tip better than Republicans, so I made an extra $20.

Dave's cousin dropped off some bookcases a couple days ago; we may get more tomorrow. I've been using them to reshelve fiction, alphabetically by author. I've almost filled two bookcases, and I'm up to "H". Of course, this is just fiction, not counting plays, mythology, or poetry. But other than that, we're shelving fiction together: although my first temptation was to shelve SF&F, mystery, children's, and general fiction separately, Lis pointed out that it makes absolutely no sense to do so for a collection as small as ours, and would require me to make many judgement calls.

I'm a big fan of shelving all fiction together. The Arlington library has almost all their hardcover fiction in one section, and I find it makes books *easier* for me to find. SF&F, mystery, historical, romance, and general fiction, are all together. They have a section for "new arrivals," which makes sense in a public library, but not a home collection. There's also a YA section, covering quite a broad range of topics and maturity levels.

My home library goes a little farther, shelving biography, plays, poetry, and non-technical history and science books among the fiction. Ok. Maybe that's not a little farther.

Well, biography is going to be shelved in non-fiction by Dewey Decimal, mainly in history. 'Cause, as Lis points out, does it make sense to have to look in two different places for books on Elizabeth and books on Elizabeth's reign?
