Yeah, that was about my reaction. You know how cats will half-fluff their tail and get all bristly and jumpy at new strange things? That's how I feel about it. Ultimately, I'll have to decide whether to accept it as part of my territory, or claw it to shreds and pee on it.
I prefer the new format. Then again, I tend to like things as simple as possible, graphically. So many websites make the index for the text appallingly dependent on graphics, so it's not really feasible to use a text-based browser anymore. But that would be my preference.
I do like the way they make it so easy to choose which format you prefer. And I like the meme of passing along the instructions about how to set your preferences, to anyone who might possibly want to know. There seems to be a local custom of using "meme" to refer to all sorts of flapdoodle and quizes and so forth. But this fast relay of many people trying to help strangers fiddle with the lj interface...this seems closer to a true meme. I haven't been here long - is it characteristic of the subculture?

How anyone could have thought that nice useful sidebar was clutter is beyond me.
Thank you again.

Ditto on
We fear change. And sometimes for good reason.
