"There will be no return to tyranny in Iraq," he said, adding that the U.S. presence was needed to assure that Iraq does not fall back into the hands of those loyal to deposed leader Saddam Hussein.

The man just doesn't get irony, does he?

The president vowed that the United States will not leave Iraq "before freedom is fully established,"

"We will KEEP our military there, shooting protesters and preventing elections, until you become FREE!"

"We ended a regime that possessed weapons of mass destruction, harbored and supported terrorists, suppressed human rights and defied the just demands of the United Nations and the world," Bush said.

. . . of course, we've still found no EVIDENCE that they had weapons of mass destruction, and no links between Iraq and terrorists. Hussein did suppress human rights and defy the UN and the world. . . but then, that's what we're doing, too.

You forgot about the other true bastions of democracry in Iraq --

a) the free elections have been cancelled indefinitely because we can't impose our slate of candidates and
b) the puppet mayor that we installed in (?) was just removed due to corruption and replaced with another puppet mayor

Dontcha just love a free and democratic country?

Much as I hate to have to be fair to W, the first statement (taken on its own) isn't entirely laughable. AFAIK, what we're maintaining in Iraq is not a tyranny. It's not democracy, but it's not tyranny, and one not-unreasonable justification for our remaining there is to keep a tyranny (whether from a resurgent Baath party or even Saddam, or a new Shiite dictatorship) from establishing control before democracy has a chance. Not saying that IS the reason we're staying, and if it is we're sure doing a piss-poor job of working towards a free democracy.

However, your responses to the other two quotes are dead on as I see it.

Hey, it takes time to manufacture convincing evidence. Give the inspection teams more time! After all, finding evidence of weapons of mass destruction is nearly as high a priority as protecting the cultural treasures of this ancient society.

Oops, did I say "Manufacture"? I meant "Discover", of course.

Irony, indeed!

Well, looking at:
'a regime that possessed weapons of mass destruction, harbored and supported terrorists, suppressed human rights and defied the just demands of the United Nations and the world'

There are plenty of people who would posit that this statement could apply to W's regime as well. Obviously, there are far fewer suppressions of human rights, and much more indirect support or support in the past for terroristic-type organizations, but we (US) have pretty much done it all at one point or another, and in general W'dubya is pushing us more and more in that direction...
