Congressman Jeff Flake of Arizona has blasted the NIH for funding research into female sexual dysfunction.

Dear Congressman Flake:

I read with a sense of horror and disbelief your comments denegrating the use of
federal money to study one of the most vital quality-of-life health issues facing
many Americans today.

$26,000 is a tiny, tiny price to spend to support a conference to help learn
about the female sexual arousal cycle, a topic about which medical science knows
very little -- and, because of this, medicine finds itself helpless to aid women
like my wife, who cannot have sex.

Please imagine this, Congressman Flake: a couple, very much in love, who have
been married for years, and yet who have never had sex. Because we cannot.

I don't know about how YOU feel about family values, but in MY family, this means
that I haven't had sex, either. And there is very little that can medically be
done about this, because science knows next to nothing about how this works.

In the preliminary studies that have been done so far, it appears that something
like half of all women have some form of sexual dysfunction -- very few, of
course, are as serious as the one my wife suffers from that makes intercourse
entirely impossible, yet if 1 in 4 Americans suffers from this, and many suffer
deeply, doesn't that make it worth studying? Doesn't it make it worth fixing?

Please, Congressman Flake, retract your comments, and apologize to the fifty
million or more Americans whom this research would benefit.

Well said. Womens' health issues in general never get as much help as they ought. People have only just started trying to remedy this, and naturally all the usual assholes are coming out of the woodwork to whine about it.

On the other hand, J. Michael Bailey is insane, and I wouldn't give him a quarter. There's a good article here about a "study" of gays in which he discovered that they're high-voiced sissies who hate sports and want to be girls. The article goes on to state that he enjoyed his research so much that he frequently goes to gay bars.
