One of my high school friends was in town for a conference; she called a foo at a bar/restaurant near her hotel. I got to meet a couple other of her friends; she got to meet Lis. It was really cool.

That is all.

"Foo" is, in general, the first metasyntactic variable. (The second and third are "bar" and "foobar", which is distinct -- which is HOPEFULLY distinct -- from "fubar".)

Thus, you can use "foo" to mean "y'know, a thingy. Or something. Like, I dunno what to call it. But it's one of those."

In this case, "foo" means, "y'know, like, a get-together sort of thing."

"Metasyntactic variable" means, "a thing which means whatever you need it to mean, because you don't feel like working out exactly what you SHOULD call it. So you just grab that word to slot in so you don't have to figure it out right then."

"Calling a foo" means "announcing some sort of get-together of an unspecified but generally informal form that people can show up to or not according to their availability." It's a useful thing for people who have friends in different cities, but who have tight schedules and their friends also have tight schedules. So you just announce that you'll be in this place at this time, working around whatever your commitments are that brought you to whichever city in the first place, and then people show up as they can.

Oh, I see. Interesting, I swear I never heard that word before now. (I've also never heard "metasyntactic" before either. I should pay closer attention to my 'new word of the day' entries.)

Thanks. Two new words to start the week!
