Lis uses binder clips the way tech crew uses electrician's tape, crafters use hot glue guns, and everyone else uses duct tape -- that is to say, "far too much for far too many things than they should work for, but they make it work, anyway."

It's like, every group of people has a "if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" hammer, but it's different for every group, and they all make it work anyway.

Lis attempted to build car mounts for our phones out of binder clips. I eventually stuck pieces of velcro to our dashboard and our phones, which works just fine, but Lis is still playing with the design of her binder clip creation.

I'm trying to think about what my go-to general tool for any problem is, like that. Maybe whining.

I admire Lis's creativity and resourcefulness!

(My go-to tool for most things is zip ties, which is fine as long as you don't need to untie whatever it is afterwards. I've killed the blades on my Swiss Army knife's sad little pair of scissors, cutting zip ties free, and the wee bastards aren't worth sharpening.)

My wife's computer desk has one of those slide out keyboard trays. It's supposed to lock in place when pulled out, but it doesn't hold very well.

She keeps a giant bag clip -- the kind you use for chips -- on her desk. When she pulls the tray out, she clips it to one side, and it keeps it from sliding back in. :)

I've found myself using a lot of wire coat hangers as raw material for fabricated stuff over the years. Also cotton clothesline. Both are durable and useful.

I'm not much at home repairs (icon), but I do use binder clips a lot. And masking tape. But it's usually "What's within reach, or at most across the room, that I can use?"
