US President George Bush applauded England's suspension of home rule in Northern Ireland, after Sinn Fein refused to sever ties to the IRA. He said that there is no place for paramilititaries in a democratic society.

Supporters of the United States Second Amendment were disturbed.

In other news, Brig. Gen. Rick Backus of the Rhode Island Army National Guard was stripped of all his duties and forced into early retirement for his actions as Task Force Commander in charge of the Al-Qaeda prisoners-of-it's-not-really-a-war in Guantanamo Bay. The reasons for this were Gen. Backus's reprehensbile actions of saying "Peace to you", and "God be with you" to the prisoners, and, even more reprehensibly, for promising them humane treatment. Spokesmen for the Army National Guard explained that Gen. Backus's promises of humane treatment were complicating interrogation efforts.

Sadly, I'm not making either of these up, or even exaggerating.

A Google search for "Rick Backus" doesn't pull anything up... what's your source on that one? (Not that I don't believe you; I just want more details.)

His name is spelled Rick Baccus

Yeah, I got the spelling from the Congressional Record, from the speech in which the congresscritter from RI welcomed him to the job. Serves me right for trusting the Congressional Record, which is bad with names.
