"Danger" and "anger" should rhyme. So should "Penelope" and "antelope." Since people named "Penelope" will cut you if you call them "Pen-a-lope", I think I'll just start calling the animal "an-TIP-o-lee".

That would be "an-TEP-o-lee" :)

Personally, I've always been disappointed in the received pronunciation of "astrolabe" on similar grounds.

Is the Spoonerism intentional? Or did you mean an-TEL-o-pee?

Pena-lope was how I thought the word was pronounced when I was a kid. I read a lot of words I'd never heard spoken, like that famous mystery writer A-GAH-tha Christie.

I like an-TEL-o-pee. It's always fun to put the em-PHA-sis on the wrong syl-LA-ble.

A lady I worked with came to me one day and said, "look at this unusual name. It's Rebekah..." (Reb rhyming with treble) - uh - kuh (rhyming with cup).

I smiled and said, "and some times it's pronounced "Rebecca". You know, like Esau and Jacob's mother."

A face-palm moment and her instant recognition then gave us the occasional laugh, over the years!

During the "Antelope Cobbler" scandal in Italy (involving the corruption of the prime minister by Lockheed), Italians pronounced the English codename as an-TEL-o-peh cobbler.
