Some background for people who don't follow football -- read "some Americans."
David Beckham is among THE hottest properties in football today. (Soccer, to us USAians.) He's the star player of Manchester United, one of the biggest, most profitable, and most popular football teams in the world. His contract was just sold to Real Madrid, which is possibly an even bigger, more profitable, and more profitable football team. They've been pretty much putting together a football dream team by buying the contracts of every single really, really, amazing football player in the world.
Anyway, this Slate article makes the comment that "Beckham could be the final piece that makes Madrid the top conglomerate. He will give Madrid a foothold in Asia, where he is literally a demigod."
I read this and instinctively did my "Oh, great. Yet another person who misuses the word 'literally'."
Then I went on to the next sentence.
Nope, they meant "literally".
