Nicky was just out in the hall, crying pathetically. I called, "Nicky, I'm over here. Come here." A grey furry blur came charging in, and jumped into my lap to snuggle. 'Cause he was all lonely because there was no human within direct eyesight.

You missed the look in those slit-pupiled eyes. The one that said, "We will never speak of this again. It never happened. Indiscretion will lead to a tragic accident in your slippers when you least expect it.

Nope, his eyes were totally round the whole time. He's unaware that he's supposed to be vicious. He's cool with "annoying", though. And he likes to push things off of things.

Onyx gets the same way at times. She likes to be near me or Greg even if she's not sitting on me (Greg won't let her park herself on him). On my last trip out of town, after a couple of days, she started looking for me, according to Greg.

They only want us to *believe* they're independent and aloof. Our kitty goes into a deep funk when we're away from her for far too long.

In my experience, most cats are only as aloof and independent as they need to be. A lot does depend on their early life experiences. Mostly, I've seen cats become extremely aloof when the humans who share their lives interact with them only sporadically. They definitely do not appreciate being ignored, then expected to respond with affection upon demand.

Neither of which Nicky ever will need to worry about, given the humans he had the good sense to select as his companions.

Baldur does the same thing -- he can be less than 10 feet away, but if it's around a corner he thinks I've disappeared. Silly boy. I guess cats don't have object permanence, except for food.

Maggie and Frankie are both attention whores. They just don't do "aloof and independent".

(More seriously, I'm wondering if Maggie has separation anxiety.)

Our Olivia used to wail and hit us with her paws if we tried to be nice to her as we were leaving the house in the morning (the very deepest form of betrayal). And she'd come running when we got home in the evening.

This was the cat who used to get up under the DH's wool jerseys in the evening and flat-out refuse to get off his lap until bed. At which point she slept between us with her head on the pillow and her body stretched out under the covers like a human.

Yeah, totally aloof and independent.
