I came home from Boskone with a pretty bad case of con-crud. Nonetheless, on Monday, I managed to drag myself to the gym for my appointment. I got there fifteen minutes late, and barely dragged myself through a light workout, but I did it anyway.

On Tuesday, I was much worse, and couldn't get out of bed all day. Lis bought me medicines before she went to work, and brought me wonton soup after she came home, and I survived Tuesday. Wasn't the best day I ever had, but I survived.

Today, Wednesday, I woke up feeling much better than yesterday, and probably slightly better than I felt on Monday. But I wasn't sure. I wasn't sure if I was up to going through a workout at the gym today.

But I figured, the best way to find out was to try.

So I did.

It wasn't a great workout, by any stretch of the imagination, but I did it -- and I felt physically somewhat better for having done it. It seems to have worked out some of the muscle aches from being sick, and gotten my breathing a little better.

Six months ago, would I have even THOUGHT about going to the gym on a day when I had been bedridden the day before? I doubt it. And yet, I did -- and it HELPED.

Pretty much the same workout I'd have been doing anyway, but just a bit lighter. 3 sets of bench press, 12 reps of 135 lbs, dumbbell press on the incline bench, one set of 40 lbs, 10 reps, 2 sets of 35, 10 reps. 3 sets of 12 pushups, on an incline, 3 sets of hip ridges, 12 reps, 3 sets of 30 crunches, 3 sets of tricep pulldowns, 12 reps, 3 sets of leg curls, 12 reps, 3 sets of overhead presses, 45 lbs, 12 reps, and I THINK that was it.

So, very little ab work, not much legs (but this was supposed to be an upper body day, anyway), and the upper body work at lower weights than it would usually be.

Self Discipline is a wonderful thing. Not only do you get the satisfaction of a physical work-out but the mental satisfaction of the accomplishment :o)

Well, I'm working with a trainer. That means that it doesn't have to be SELF-discipline. I have a trainer who can help motivate me. Otherwise, I'd never have managed to do it.

I'm glad you're feeling better.

It's pretty cool about the workout too.

Bravo.

I keep balancing between "do I have the energy?" (for which the answer is often, why not try?) and "this specific joint hurts in ways that suggest a workout might be a mistake".

And, of course, perfectly good days when I just go, and do the thing, and head for home afterwards.

My spousal unit taught me a while ago that if it's just a cold without a cough, (definitely nothing with a fever, vomiting, pain, etc.) exercise will make you feel better, at least for a while. The adrenalin works wonders on snot. ;-)
