LIS: [from the kitchen] KITTENS! Get out of there!
IAN: What did they do this time?
LIS: Well, I WAS going to ask if you wanted any more of the rice and vegetables, but the cats have finished it off.
IAN: Weren't you telling me about a website that said that grain was bad for cats?
LIS: Rice isn't as bad as a lot of the other grains. Anyway . . . I've got to say, I'm pretty impressed with their iron gullets so far. They've been sneaking bits of EVERYTHING.
IAN: . . .true. And they haven't even puked once yet.
LIS: Well, they did that one time when they were over with
felis_sidus. But that was after they ate the tub of Vaseline . . .

Date: 2009-08-31 05:13 pm (UTC)Cats not being supposed to eat grain is a new one on me. I know it's not their ideal foodsource or anything, but I've met too many cats who were obsessed with starch to have thought it was actually inimical to them.

Date: 2009-08-31 05:43 pm (UTC)This school of thought states that gooshyfood is better than kibble, in that cats in the wild get a good percentage of their water from meat, and that the more meat that is in a catfood, rather than other fillers, the better.
These both seem reasonable to me.
Byt they then go on to state that cereal grains are actually bad for cats. Which I only agree with so far: if cereal grains are the primary source of calories for your cat (which, yeah, COULD happen with some commercial cat foods), okay, yeah, maybe that's not ideal. But cats eat SO many things and deal with them . . . okay . . . that I can't see it as a really big deal.

Date: 2009-08-31 07:53 pm (UTC)My parents' cats are obsessed with kibble for some reason. They eat their gooshyfoods too but the kibble seems to be an indispensible favorite, so we make sure there's lots of water around for them. So far so good. Since we got them a bit older than some other cats are adopted we've had to deal with their preexisting preferences somewhat.
We tried several brands of supposed "healthier" cat foods on them when we got them, but they refuse to eat any. Sigh.
