Yes, Obama won. And I am happy about that.

But the fact that bigots voted against the marriages of my friends upsets me.

Nonetheless, freedom and justice WILL prevail. The passage of Proposition 8 was a defeat for justice, equality, and freedom. But that defeat will not stand. Truth and right cannot be held down for long, not when good people work for it. And good people will continue to work for it, and my friends' marriages will be soon celebrated as legal and binding.

I dunno man, this whole gay marriage rubber band dance in California is truly disturbing. One motion bans, another motion vetoes or repeals, another motion bans, another motion vetoes or appeals. And it's starting to get both tiresome and frightening at the same time (the more it gets vetoed, the more right wingers get scary with their anti-GLBT hate).

What I don't understand: how could this measure get a majority in Los Angeles County, a reliably blue locality which always seemed to me a tolerant and liberal place when I lived there in 1979-84?

As I said elsewhere, the more left-leaning Californians were caught between a rock and a hard place. They needed to get out the vote for Obama, but in doing so delved deep into communities that -- as a whole -- are very anti-gay marriage (Hispanics, African-Americans, who are a majority of the citizens in LA County) So... sacrifice civil rights in CA to get an Obama presidency. I am not sure how I feel about that.

Because - not to be racist, but it's the truth - 70% of all black voters voted for Prop 8. Logic suggests that the vast majority of these also voted for Obama.

I'm heartsick.

Yes.

I'm already thinking about how to budget for activism and stamps. This fight is not over.

Same thing happened in FL. It makes me sick. I have one friend who is pregnant and doesn't want to have the kid, so that kid is going to grow up with a mom who resents him. And I have two other friends who are dying to adopt the little boy of our other friend and they would give him a Much better life with Much more love. But they can't because it's illegal. Grrr. It doesn't make sense.

I hope you're right. It disgusts me that voters felt entitled to rip families apart and deny benefits to their children. We have a new president, but despite Republican campaign propaganda to the contrary, he's never been much of a social liberal. In any case, we can't count on much support behind this when the country has lots of other problems distracting it. Obviously each of us will have to support the cause however we can, but it's disheartening to me.

No, Obama's not going to be a leader in this fight. He'll lead in other fights.

But, see, he's not going to be a leader against this fight, either. And that's good enough. Looking around my friends list alone, I see leaders who can win this one.

Oh, I agree--it's nice not to have a direct opponent leading the country for a friggin' change.

I will try to be more activist next time this thing comes around--last time I was unable to contribute. When the fight re-convenes I hope to be able to give both time and money to the cause.
