It just occured to me that one of my Hebrew School students is Bartleby the Scrivner. Every so often, I give him an assignment, and he says, "I'd rather not."
It's not precisely "I would prefer not to," but it's much the same effect. He's very polite about it, he just simply says that he'd rather work in his workbook, or draw a picture, or some such thing. So he does.
