My thoughts on the latest SUP . . . thing.

First, I don't think the one-day boycott with accomplish anything. Nonetheless, I will be participating, out of respect to beckyzoole, who called it. Also, because I'll be at Purim celebrations anyway.

I was going to write a post about how it was always a good idea to look at things from other people's point of view, and we should look at how this whole thing appeared from Anton Nosik's point of view, about why he feels like HE'S being victimized, about why he feels he's being bullied, and what that says about him and his mindset, about what is in his mind, and how this should influence how we approach him.

Then I re-read his interview, and said, "Fuck it. He's just an asshole."

I found this post rather enlightening about his mindset, for what it's worth. There's definitely some cultural differences going on here.

To catch me up on this subject ... is the purpose of the one-day boycott to call for the return of new Basic Accounts?

Four points, one of which is negotiable.

The negotiable point is the return of basic accounts -- that's the point that isn't necessary.

The other three points: keeping people in the loop before changes are made, actually CONSULTING the advisory committee that was set up to deal with this sort of thing, and un-blocking the filtered "top interests" list -- and that fourth one is already done.

One-day boycott of LJ? Is that the idea here? And the boycott is because there aren't going to be free accounts anymore? LJ's already got my money, I don't see how my logging in or not on any particular day is going to make any difference.

The idea is not to create new content during that period. But before I participate in such a collective action, I'd like to know exactly what we are demanding.

I am under the impression it has less to do with basic accounts and more to do with the quiet censoring of interests that took place for much of this past month.

i don't think it will acomplish anything either, _because_ he's acting like an asshole (and i took a while to come to the latter conclusion as well).

but the point of basic accounts providing a lot of content is valid, and i'd really like to see a spike in the traffic reports, which is why i am participating.

Though, as this post points out, Mr. Nosik is not actually "director" of anything. So it's not at all clear how much his attitudes and so forth will hold for the people making the decisions.

I am undecided. It would also be quite possible for me, living as I do at GMT + 13 to participate in the strike without changing my posting habits at all, which seems somehow disingenuous. I need to think about this further.
