Lis is working from home today, so we went out to a buffet in Malden Center. Unfortunately, Fu Long's really disappointed us. We knew we were in trouble when we noticed that they now have tablecloths . . .

The buffet is one dollar more expensive -- and a full steam table smaller than it used to be. Ah, well. It was okay, but it wasn't the amazing buffet I remember.

However -- as we were walking from our parking space to the restaurant, we saw, RIGHT around the corner, a place advertising bubble tea in the window. As bubble tea is one of the things Lis loves, we went in after we finished lunch.

There were a half-dozen kids -- they looked Vietnamese or maybe Cambodian to me -- sitting around one table, with bubble teas and smoothies and so forth in front of them. There were flat-screen TVs on all the walls, playing Vietnamese music. I know it was Vietnamese, because it was karaoke -- the lyrics were on the screen.

It's a bubble-tea / karaoke teenage hangout spot. A karaoke cafe, rather than a karaoke bar. I feel like I'm a generation too old to hang out there, but for you young whippersnappers, maybe you want to check it out.

The tea is amazing. It's fresh-made stuff instead of the stuff from mixes like everywhere else we've had.

I'm a snob about bubble tea. If it's from a mix I won't order it :/

Yay for karaoke bubble tea cafe! :D

Now that I've had the real stuff, I understand why.

There are times when I really miss living in Malden. Well, in Mass in general...

Man, I'm so tired of bubble tea made with mixes!

I don't even know if I'd like bubble tea, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for this place. :-)

What's the name of the bubble tea place or the disappointing buffet place? Have you tried FuLoon's regular menu? They have some fabulous food. I've never been there for the buffet but their Jiang Pao Duck as well as the tea-smoked duck were delicious. The Dong Khanh Restaurant in Chinatown also serves up great bubble tea (without powders from what I could see. They scooped out fresh avocado for my shake.) though you might have to wait a while to get your bubble tea. There's frequently a crowd in front waiting for bubble tea (they don't like you sit at the tables if you're only there for drinks).

Fu Long IS the disappointing buffet place. They used to have a buffet that was partially American standards, and partially the sorts of things they had on their regular menu. And now it's all American standards, and not that great.

They have a chestnut-date chicken dish on their regular menu which is very good.

Ah ok...I had wondered if I should come back for the buffet but now I'll just skip. The chestnut-date chicken sounds good though. I'll look for the bubble tea place too...that would be a great dessert for dinner.
