My cousin and I bought memberships to the Danvers YMCA. He lives in Danvers, I live in Melrose. We found out that the Melrose YMCA is almost exactly twice the cost of the Danvers one. We're planning on going three times a week together; we went for the first time today.

Are you really allowed to use the eliptical machines backwards? I mean, it doesn't hurt at all to do it backwards.

You are not only allowed, you are encouraged. It's an intended way to use the machine, and it uses different muscles, and muscles differently.

Cardio exercise is not supposed to hurt.

Leave you sweaty and tired, sure. Not hurt.

That "no pain, no gain" bit--which isn't entirely true anyway--is a weight-lifter's mantra, and refers to the muscle burn of pushing yourself on how much metal you can move around by force. It's not about elliptical machines, or exercise bikes, or any of that good stuff we do for our hearts and to build general endurance.
