There was a message on my answering machine this morning, when I came home. From Hebrew school. Wondering where I was. It started yesterday. When I was in Canada.

I keep hoping that this is just a nightmare. How is it possible that I wrote down the start date of Hebrew school wrong? How is that possible? Please let this be a nightmare.

Horrors. The very fiber of nightmares. I'm so sorry.

I know how this kind of thing can happen.

I get confused about dates and times myself, check and recheck numerous times, and still am not confident that I have not gotten confused - especially when I am not sleeping well. Which is happening quite often these days. So tired. I was teaching at the mikveh on Sunday afternoon and didn't fall asleep until about 3AM the night before. Then I had two dreams/nightmares: 1) I forgot to go to services on Friday evening and I was suppose to lead them. I thought, "I hope [co-leader] was ok leading by herself." 2) I realized at 3PM on Sunday afternoon that I was supposed to be teaching at 1PM. I thought, "I hope [co-teacher] was ok leading by herself." After the second dream, I woke up feeling anxious. I decided to get up right then, pack my stuff for teaching, get dressed, and leave early for the mikveh. I made it in plenty of time and the teaching went well. I hope the Hebrew School class went well, also, and that the staff pulled through.

My sympathies, but at least you come by date-challengedness honestly. It's not just [livejournal.com profile] rebmommy who sometimes gets lost in the calendar. When we were signing the mortgage on Surry Road, D_ paused at the date. For long time. "It's the 12th", I said helpfully. D_ nodded thoughtfully. Continued pause. "Of December". Nod. Still pausing. Then, somewhat plaintively, "But, what year?"

(Truth in story-telling: the date may not be precise; it was a long time ago!)

Hey - that happens. (I've seen far worse date manglings.) I'm sure it'll be okay.

This is my terror every year I come back to school after the summer holidays.

They WILL understand, though - it really is an 'anyone of us could do this' mistake.

IIRC, you've covered for teachers who have just failed to show up in the past. At least it isn't your first year or aything. Still, I know how it feels to be totally blindsided like that, and I'm so sorry it happened to you. Hopefully it will all be sorted out this weekend and I'm glad you enjoyed Canada!

Maybe it'll make a good self-deprecating laugh-at-yourself story years from now. But for right now, eep! For what it's worth though, one neighbor told me his principal calls him the week before school starts to make sure he's coming the first day. He's never missed before and it's just a joking call -- but he figures it's not completely in jest because it's something he could imagine himself doing. So you at least have company.
