Note to self: if a student in your class starts being all sarcastic, going to him and saying, "No dark sarcasm in the classroom!" won't actually help, unless your goal actually WAS to have the entire rest of the class sing large chunks of "The Wall" to the one student who hadn't heard it.

(Sixth and seventh graders -- eleven, twelve years old or so.)

Laughs aloud, and really needed that. [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes?

oh. dear. falling off chair now!

(and somehow the idea that those little kids are that familiar with "The Wall" is faintly disturbing. I was a teen when it was first released and didn't think any of it was "suitable for young ears" so to speak.)

That's great! I can just picture it, and I must thank you for the laugh.

It makes me happy that almost all of them knew it well enough to sing it.

Yes, I was impressed that so many of the kids knew it!

Did the student you said this to respond by saying "Hey, teacher, leave us kids alone?" Because that would've been even more awesome.

No, he just started singing, "No dark sar-CASM in the CLASS-room" in a creepy fake-British-y accent/

Before I got to the last line, I was thinking, "Wow, his first-graders have a really creepy level of cultural sophistication." Now I feel better. I guess you changed classes and I didn't notice.

Well, it did work, in a way. At least the sarcasm stopped for the moment.

So no one yelled "If you don't eat your meat, you don't get any pudding! How can you have your pudding if you don't eat your meat?"

Ok - I am feeling the generation gap acutely. Please explain "The Wall".

You CAN'T be serious. Pink Floyd? How can you not be familiar with Pink Floyd?

1979 -- I remember that you were buying vinyl then.

So - it's not a generational gap - just my generational age showing up. I remember Pink FLoyd, of course, but not "The Wall". Do you have a copy, at least of the words? Could I find it on-line?
