So, what the hell does "chuffed" mean, anyway? I've heard it several times, and I've got it narrowed down to two possible meanings: happy/pleased/proud, and annoyed/worried/upset.

While it's possible that it means both of these, I kind of doubt it.

So -- is "being chuffed" a good thing or a bad thing?

As a Brit, I can tell you with 100% certainty that it means happy and pleased.

"Hey, you got that job!"
"Yeah, I'm really chuffed."

:-)!

In Newcastle it tended to be the former.

Still is. Tho' I may be the last man in Newcastle who actually says it...

Another British datapoint here. It's definitely the first of those two options you have there. Not to be confused with 'chaffed' which seems to mean the second definition to (some?) Americans. Nor 'chafed' for which I suggest the liberal application of talcum powder.

That could be why I've been using 'chuffed' to mean pretty much the opposite of how British people actually use it.

Never heard it as bad-thing; have heard "dischuffed," though.

Unfortunately, I've also been told "diddling her chuffie" turns up in some bad British paperback porn. So, y'know, can't use word.

'chuffed' is pleased. 'A chuff' on the other hand is a useless, annoying person. Although that latter may only be true in Scotland....

a chuff is also the noise of affection a happy tiger makes.

I believe it refers to the nice warm feeling of being flushed with pride. Might even derive from the French chauffage, meaning "heat".
