Wouldn't it be awful to be one of those people who needs to agree with someone in order to like them? What would you talk about?

I'm not sure, but I imagine there would be a lot of head nodding and back patting.

Internet communities have been formed on less.

I wouldn't want to be one of those people. I'd be missing out on so much. While I find I can learn from just about anyone, it seems that there is even more to learn from those who have opinions contrary to my own.

Nothing. However, there are a lot of really boring people out there, and I'm guessing that they're just okay with that.

I look at this question as a variation on the old "would anyone rather be less intelligent and happier?" question (or, "would you be happy as a Stepford person?"). All twists on the idea that ignorance is bliss. But I can't see anyone who exists outside of ignorance being willing to accept a mental "demotion" to that state.

Some days, thinking less sounds pretty damned attractive. 'Course, there's always booze for that.

There's a few things I can't agree to disagree about. But I don't need to like someone to have an interesting conversation with them.

I think it depends on the field of "agree with." I don't need to agree with my friends on everything, but there are ethical questions that could probably break a friendship. Also, there's a useful distinction between "agree with someone about book X" and "agree that books are worth talking about."

One could, actually, have an entertaining and educational time discussing the ramifications of the agreement.

By which I mean... let me give an example. I've spent the last 14 years (ye Gods, eek) discussing slightly controversial interests online with like-minded fellow fans thereof. Whether the subject be polyamory, cooking meat, fanfiction, whatever, every so often someone who thinks the entire concept is morally wrong drops by to play, and it's exhausting and annoying to deal with one more iteration of Why We Shouldn't Be Doing This, especially when they claim that we just want to censor disagreement. Well, no; we want to discuss how to manage our time or get a good sear on steak or keep our characters recognizeable or whatever, rather than have yet another debate over something we've taken as a given, the validity of our shared activity.

(That said, if I refused to talk to anyone I disagreed with I wouldn't be posting this, would I? :D)
