Weird Al and Donny Osmond putting together stuff for the video.

In a comment on [livejournal.com profile] theferrett's LJ, [livejournal.com profile] starline pointed out that this is in front of a green screen.

And of course, so is this.

I don't have any editing skills.

But some of you do.

You know you have a DUTY to make something of this. You KNOW you do. It's a Moral Imperative.

I can't watch Youtube at work so I have to ask, is Donnie in the full video? I've watched it a few times but didn't know who the dancing white guy behind Al was.

yeah, that's Donny Osmond. The video X. linked to is just Weird Al and Donny dancing in front of a green screen. Only a few frames of that take got used in the final video.

Yes, that's Donny. In this video, they do the whole song, Al singing, Donnie dancing behind it. It's clear that they clipped out of this to inject into the full video . . . and that's Donny. :)

for those of us totally unfamiliar with video editing, what is the significance of a green screen?

It is an unusual color. Specifically, it's a color that doesn't appear in nature, at least not in that shade. And it's an industry-standard color.

So what you can do is replace things that are on a green screen with whatever you want. It's how you put in computer-generated or matte or any other background that you want.

It used to be done as a "blue screen", but the particular shade of blue they used would occasionally show up in the foreground, like in someone's eye color or something, which led to bizzare things like the background showing up in the person's eyes, making it look like they had a hole in their head. . .

so this color doesn't look anything like any grass or trees or flowers (no matter what season)?

Ayup. It's kind of flourescent.

(here via <lj user="rmjwell") In fact, blue was the film industry standard, although other colors were used depending on the matte technique. In the digital age, though, green became predominant because the way digital media samples color made it easier to work with. Watching the wizards at ILM work on a scene from "Men In Black II" was a treat; a process that would have taken weeks (had it even been possible) in the days of chroma key now days (including shooting the scenes).

Thanks for the information! I've been working under the impression that it had something to do with natural colors, too.
