Every once in a while, I talk about opening a restaurant called "House of Chateau Maison", which would serve things like shrimp scampi, chai tea, and chicken-fried chicken; there would be a soup du jour of the day; you could get salsa sauce to put on things; there would be an ATM machine in the corner if you needed cash.

I think it could be popular with the hoi polloi.

an ATM machine in the corner if you needed cash.

But only if you remember your PIN number!

With the recent proliferation of coffee-based drinks, there must be one with a redundant name. I can't think of it, though.

I think your restaurant is a great idea! You'll need to open it in Metroville City, of course.

We live just a few miles from a structure with the official name of "City of University City City Hall".... But I digress.

At one point, DelDOT designated Exit 4 from I95 as "Metroform". Nobody knew what a "Metroform" was, and it didn't correspond to any place name, structure, or facility in the area, new or old. Turned out DelDOT just made it up. (They renamed the area "Churchman's Crossing" for nearby Churchman's Marsh.)

Also, don't forget the mahi mahi and couscous.

Sadly, there is. It's chicken, fried like chicken would be normally. (Breading, etc.) I suppose it's to distinguish it from things like bacon-fried chicken or French-fried chicken.

Damn, missed the topic of redundancy, otherwise I'd bring up that I think I remember using "the" before "hoi polloi" is sort of like "and" before "et cetera". But I mentioned it anyway. Wow, that was a really stupid thing to pick up on. Even moreso if I'm wrong! -David G.

One would be called the Jade Gate, and the other would be called Gwailo Gardens. The first would serve very authentic, delicious Chinese food, the second would serve the usual nasty stuff one gets in hole-in-the wall chop suey joints. The second place would have a notation in Chinese on the sign, "For Tasteless Americans Only. Do Not Eat Here If You Value Your Taste Buds." I anticipate that the manager of the first place would have to apologize periodically for its name, but I'd pay him or her sufficiently to compensate for that.

Calvin Trillin calls continental cuisine "Casa de la Maison House"

It took me years to get the beleaguered husband (who was raised in a household with seven menus per week, every week, forever and ever amen) into the foodie head, and I knew he was there when he faked me out on a menu by telling me they had "steak scampi"

It should be next to a "Boutique Shop"! My mother belonged to an African Violet fanciers club which took part in a yearly show. One of the themes for the flower arrangement competition section one year was "The Boutique Shop". I threw up my hands in horror and tried to get the organizers to change the name, but they just looked at me with blank expressions.

"I don't know, but they have it every day!"

I used to love that joke.

This is actually a decent idea for a restaraunt around here. I mean, you need good food too, but metro Boston is one of those places that would actually appreciate the menu itself. You'd need a little story of how you bootstrapped the startup of the restaraunt by selling your shoes, or something, too.
