Lis's mother is a wonderful person -- she wanted to know if there were any candies I remembered from my childhood that I hadn't been able to get, so she could mail them to me.

While I genuinely appreciate the idea, it turns out that they didn't really have anything at the "retro candy store" that the local candy store down the street doesn't have.

It occurs to me that Boston doesn't do "retro", because, to do "retro", you have to have left something at some point, in order to go back to it. You couldn't really do a candy shop that was re-creating a candy shop from twenty, or fifty, years ago, because we have actual candy shops that have been around for twenty, or fifty, years, and haven't significantly changed.

Heck, we're so close to the Necco factory that the wafers actually taste good! :)

Some time we have to take you to the candy store by our house.
It's a good ol' fashioned store where you pick up a little basket and then go through the jars -- Tootsie Rolls 3¢, 4 for a dime, 8¢ for the candied grapefruit slices...
It's often surprising both how long it takes to figure out how to spend a dollar and how much you can get for one, and also how much fun it is picking and choosing.

That sounds wonderful. Wish I'd known about it when [livejournal.com profile] jadasc and I were in search of gingerbread house decorating material for [livejournal.com profile] ladysprite's birthday party, but we'll do that next year. :)

It is just like teh Brigams in Arlington Hights.
It looks like a '50s soda fountain (it basically
is one)It was recently renovated, so it looks like
a very nice one. Now this is not retro syling since
the place looked just like that before teh renovation.
I was very pleased that they kept the old look.
