First, Lis was, unfortunately, wiped out, so didn't come with me. So I went to shul by myself. As Lis couldn't wear the costume I made for her, I wore it instead.

I took an old t-shirt, and drew on it the chemical structures of 3-methylbutyl acetate, octyl butrate, pentyl acetate, methypropyl butate, pentyl butyrate, and a couple other molecule chains of the same family, along with the general formula of

R - C=O
      |
     OR'

Which doesn't look good 'cause I don't know how to do the HTML pretty for chemical structures.

I wore a crown, and, for added verisimilitude, my Mad Scientists Local 42 logo lab coat.

Then I challenged people to guess which Purim character I was.

A good half-dozen or dozen people got it.

The front of the costume, with jacket on.

Back of the costume, showing lab coat logo.

This picture was supposed to give a somewhat better shot of the formulae on the front of the shirt, but it's not really that much better.

And the formulae on the back of the shirt.

I also brought a hip-flask which contained a Martinez cocktail, the hamentashen that I baked, the candy that we had leftover from Haloween (Lemonheads, Laffy Taffy, and Jolly Ranchers -- I'd eaten all the GOOD candy before November was well started), and our bottle of Chartreuse.

I handed out my hamentashen, sips from the hip flask, sips of Chartreuse, and candy to friends and strangers alike. Most folks were very appriciative of all four.

Some of the older kids from the Hebrew school did a shpeil that Beth found online. It was . . . okay, I guess, but not anywhere near as good as last year. Last year, a whole bunch of the kids wrote and directed their own shpeil which they rehearsed the HELL out of, and did an amazing job with. This one was pulled off of the Internet, and they had like two rehearsals, and, well, when you choose a play in which the primary humor comes from Esther having an Arnold Schwartzenagger accent, it would probably be a good idea to cast someone as Esther who had, at SOME point in her life, seen an Arnold Schwartzenagger movie, and knew what his accent was.

Rule number 78 of comedy: Ya can't do the jokes if you don't get the jokes.

Heck, I think the little tiny mini-schpeil that my class last year threw together as an additional schpeil was better than that one.

Other folks did other shpeil-like stuff between chapters, as well. I was impressed by the family (father, mother, and maybe five-year-old girl) who did Chapter 6 of the Megilla to the tune of Bowling for Soup's "1985" -- I can only vaguely remember bits of it. . .

There was . ..
Bigthan, and Teresh,
Haman married Zerish . . .

and also

'Cause the king was saved by
Mordy, Mordy, Mordechai.

Can't remember anything else of it, but, if I see them, I'll ask for a copy. It was good.

I love this costume! Let's follow up on [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s idea for a number of us to dress in this costume and go as the Poly-Esters. (See Purim LJ entry from yesterday.) I feel a Purim Rock 'n Roll musical group coming on. I want to play the drums!
