Was pilling the cat. That means, for the three of you reading this journal who DON'T have cats that need medicine on a regular basis, holding the cat's mouth open, dropping a pill down her throat, clamping her jaws shut, and rubbing her throat to make her swallow.

I'm usually pretty good at this. But, this time, she wriggled out, and shook her head enough to slide the pill all the way across the kitchen floor. And it had gotten damp enough to sog into unusable mush.

"Well, cat, you think you've won, don't you? But I've got an entire bottle of these pills!"

And I did it again. And she did it again. Except this time, the pill flew sideways and smacked into the refrigerator.

And stuck there.

Score so far: Boopsie, 2; Ian, 0.

I'm posting this before trying a third time.

Do you have a pill gun? You can get one from the vet's--they're absolutely marvelous.

My husband accidentally hit on a way to almost always make the cat swallow - put the pill in, then *immediately* pour about a teaspoon of milk into her mouth. She'll swallow reflexively to keep from "drowning." (Milk is better just because that'll bribe her a bit; if she doesn't like it or you don't have it, any liquid will do.)

he discovered this the day we had to cut the pill out of the fur of the OTHER cat, who was passing by at the critical moment....

*giggle* I hope the third time was the charm.

My dog, Brooklyn, had the ability to take a pill, have a snack, have some water, wander around for a while then come over and spit the pill out at my feet. It was annoying, but amazing.

We've only had to give Onyx liquid antibiotics. She hates it, but she does end up swallowing some of it.

Hope she eventually took her meds!

[livejournal.com profile] wren13 is a vet, and she suggests blowing (gently) in the cat's nose.

I used to have a cat who would hold it in her cheek for up to half an hour, then spit it out behind the TV.

take the gooey, near disolved pill and mash it into her fur, on her paws and hips...
she'll instinctively lick it off, and won't mind the taste a bit. go figure.

On the rare occasions we get the pill to hit the back of the throat/tongue cat-in-residence here swallows the pill instantly. It usually takes two people, one sitting on her and one driving the pill/jaws combination.

Hiding a pill in something like cream cheese can work sometimes. Or adding Marmite to it, which our cat adores, that sometimes helps.

Usually though we just deal with the lacerations on a case by case basis.

My cats would eat around pill, I have to do the same thing. Worse is hairball meds on my long hair. she HATES the stuff, Instruction say put it on her paw, right, she flings it on the wall. No I have to open mouth insert finger with med on in and scrape it off on the roof of her mouth, EVIL LOOKS but she eats it!

Tapping the end of the cat's nose gently with your forefinger as soon as you close her mouth might work. I've found it to be very effective.
