A beer and a Martinez cocktail variation.

The Martinez was developed by the granddady and patron saint of all bartenders (not really; the patron saint of bartenders is actually St. Amand), and was:

Martinez Cocktail.
(Use small bar-glass.)
Take 1 dash of Boker's bitters.
2 dashes of Maraschino.
1 pony of Old Tom gin.
1 wine-glass of Vermouth.
2 small lumps of ice.

Shake up thoroughly, and strain into a large cocktail
glass. Put a quarter of a slice of lemon in the glass, and serve. If the guest prefers it very sweet, add two dashes of gum syrup.

My version was Bols Genevier, sweet vermouth, and Angustura bitters. I could have added Maraschino liqueur, which I'm pretty sure we have somwhere in the house.

How much is a pony, anyway?

An ounce.

(Since you're going to get an email notification for this thing, and have absolutley no recolection of what your question meant, since you asked it like a WEEK ago and I just never got around to answering it, the 'pony' you're asking about here is a measure of liquor, not, in fact, a small horse.)

No, I remember. I knew it was a measure of liquor, and I knew it was not something fairly small, I just didn't know how much. Thanks.

Gin and vermouth - sound good to me. Still waiting for you to develop non-alcoholic versions of these drinks so I can enjoy them. Darn this alcohol allergy!

Hey, Mr. Bartender --- any opinion on the New York Bartending School? http://www.newyorkbartendingschool.com/indexny.php

(My niece is interested in becoming a bartender when she's of age, and is checking them out for a course this summer.)

Boker's bitters?

Where do you find Boker's bitters? It's not even listed on LeNell's bitters (http://www.lenells.com/selections/bitters.php) page.

Frankly, you don't. Nothing even close to it is made today -- rumor has it that it was cardimom-flavored, but it hasn't been manufactured in the past hundred years.

That's why I used Angustora bitters instead.
