So, Mom and Dad and Lis and I went out to see The World's Fastest Indian, which is a the story of Kiwi Burt Munro, who, in 1967, elderly and with serious heart problems, decided to take his Indian Scout motorcycle, which he'd been tinkering with for the past 42 years, to the Bonnevelle Salt Flats speed trials in Utah, and see if he couldn't get the sucker up over 200 mph.

It's a great film.

To sum up: all of you should go see it. But especially all of you from New Zealand should see it, 'cause it's a Kiwi story -- and, also, [livejournal.com profile] any_contingency and [livejournal.com profile] bikergeek, you both have GOT to see it. Also, anyone else who's either a biker or a gearhead or both -- it's a story about a Kiwi biker gearhead, after all.

I mean, Burt Munro is the kind of gearhead who casts his own pistons. Who makes the MOLDS for the pistons he's casting out of old tin cans, and gets the metal from melting down his own special blend of existing pistons.

The man is clearly insane in the good way. And it's a great movie about an elderly insane-in-the-good-way Kiwi biker gearhead with heart problems, and how he attempts to get to the Bonneville Salt Flats speed trials to ride his home-tinkered 42-year-old motorcycle.

And just maybe set a record for fastest motorcycle with an under-1000 cc engine.

Sounds cool, and I'm only a New Zealander by association.
