Does anyone have an actual recipe for klava? I just tried making something similar to it, and it was good, but I was wondering if Brust had an actual, y'know, recipe for the stuff.

("Klava" (spelling doubtful in my mind -- heck, I could be getting the name wrong: I'm bad at remembering this sort of thing) is the coffee-like and coffee-based drink that folks drink in the Vlad Taltos novels. I think it's something like coffee brewed over eggshells with lots of cream and honey, but I think there's more than that.)

I've never seen a Klava recipe from him (though he serves excellent coffee at home). His LJ is [livejournal.com profile] skzb, so you can ask him directly.

is also a Brust livejournal. Looks like it's more recently updated. It's a small small world.

Sadly, his old Dream Cafe blog died recently in a massive server crash, [livejournal.com profile] skzbrust has replaced it.

Steve likes weak coffee. *g* I'd suggest making it with egg shells and not quite enough grounds....

So - how did your "coffee-like drink" turn out? I am intrigued by the Hungarian egg coffee recipe linked to by [livejournal.com profile] rmjwell above, but also a bit scared. You try it first. BTW - thanks for teaching me about cut tags. I think it worked. Check it out my most recent LJ entry.

There's a description of how to make it (and a recipe, I think) in Issola.

Recipe in Issola

In Issola the recipe is as follows - brew regular coffee. Filter it through an equal mixture of crushed eggshells, ground vanilla beans, and wood chips (sever suggestions on types of wood in the book, but don't recall). Reheat the coffee and pass it through a cloth filter to remove any debris and oil residues. Add honey and cream to taste, and enjoy.
