Our cat is eating kugel

There's a little of the potato kugel I made a few days ago left. Lis saw the cat sniffing at it, so, she put it in front of her.

Boopsie is now munching down on the kugel enthusiastically. I think she's going to puke in a couple minutes, though.

Our kitten (okay, he's a year old now, so not really a kitten, but I still call him that), Nibbler, will eat just about anything. And we thought Pipsqueak (a standard stray tabby cat) would eat anything (she used to love popcorn and potato chips). I had no idea that cats could eat green beans, fish, chicken, meringues, rice, challah (oh yes, Challah is Nibbler's FAVORITE... he'll do ANYTHING to take a bite out of a fresh challah!), cranberries, yogurt, pasta, eggs, bananas, cheerios, etc.

Pipsqueak makes sense. She was a stray. She eats anything because she had to at some point.

The kitten was also a stray, but he was found when he was probably 4 weeks old. He was still drinking formula when we got him. And we didn't intentionally feed him people-food. But when you have a two year old eating, and the cat is anywhere near the tray, it's hard to escape the inevitability of the cat having access to people food.

He never gets sick from it. He happily eats anything that falls his direction. He actively seeks out unsupervised challah, noodles, soup, and chocolate. It's the weirdest thing.

Most human foods, while not great for cats, won't actually kill them. Chocolate can. The fact that a cat or dog has eaten it before without ill effect doesn't guarantee that the next exposure won't cause serious problems. The dangerous foods that surprised me were onions and garlic. I only recently learned that eating either can cause anemia in cats. But potatoes, milk or cream, and cooked eggs seem relatively harmless, so may Boopsie enjoy her holiday treat in good health!

Well, the kugel DOES include onions. We do keep chocolate away from the Boop -- which annoyed her, because I made fudge and won't let her have any -- but I also hadn't know about onions and garlic. Do you know if this includes leeks and scalions, too? She's showing interest in my potato-leek soup in the past. And to what level is this a problem? Most chicken things I cook have SOME onions and garlic involved -- would the amount of onion that would be cooked into chicken soup broth cause problems?

Unfortunately, it includes all members of the onion family. When I found this out, I told my vet that my cats sometimes got some sauce that had onions and garlic in it. He said that if that happened occasionally, it probably wouldn't hurt them, but that they shouldn't eat any of the actual vegetable or the greens. And to think that a few times I bought potted scallions because Titu liked to eat the greens! Thank goodness I couldn't take the kitty onion breath, and didn't give them to him more than a couple of times. I'll see what I can dig up on the subject, and let you know.

I haven't sen kitties hurt by the small amounts of onions in cooked food. I used to have a cat - Charlie Chaplin - who loved string beans and was convinced all the other animals wanted to steal them (they couldn't care less) and he would growl and guard them for a while until he was sure he had them safetly then throw them up in the air a few times and eat them.

Mu current cats like only boring cat food and raw fish (if you freeze it for 48 hours any worms or eggs are killed).

What's your favorite noodle kugel recipe? I'm looking for great hanukkah recipes.
