First anniversary? Second? Whatever. The world has so spectacularly failed to crash into the sun because of this that I don't know.

Anyway, we were at my parents' house on the actual anniversary, and Dad remembered something from when that all happened. He was at work on the construction site on coffee break, and one of the guys was reading a newspaper. Guy looked up and said, "Well, looks like gays can get married now."

One of the other guys shook his head sadly. "Haven't they suffered enough?"

And that was pretty much it.

Hmm. It kind of depends on what timeline you use.... We're coming up on the second anniversary of the court decision in February, but the court gave the legislature 180 days to work it out, so the marriages didn't start until six months later. The first anniversary of the first legal gay marriage was in May. (In other words, the court passed its judgment in Feb. 2004, and the first marriage was celebrated in May 2004.) It's actually been about 18 months since the first licenses were issued.

So I'm mildly puzzled about which anniversary it is that passed a couple days ago. But either way, the sky most certainly isn't falling; I work in Massachusetts, and *nothing* has changed. All it takes is one state to disprove the theory that we'd all be marrying box turtles and living in Gomorrah by now.

Also, that's a great anecdote.

Indeed. This must be the second anniversary of the court decision, because the first legal marriages happened in a very cheery May.

Yes - I heard on the radio that day that it was the second anniversary of the court decision. I, for one, am happy that my friends can now marry. Same sex couples who have been together for over twenty years - longer than many heterosexual marriages last - are now legally recognized as married, with the civil protections that go along with marriage. Also, the emotional support of being recognized as a "legitimate" couple is huge.

As to my husband's anecdote - funny story, but sad what it says about that man's relationship.
