We just got out of the car, after I drove Lis home from work. We started walking up the driveway, when suddenly, every pigeon that lives on the roof of the house next door suddenly took off and flew away, making a great and startling flapping noise.

"That's weird," I thought. "The only times I've seen pigeons do that was when there was a . . . "

And then I saw a REALLY BIG pigeon land on a branch right above us, maybe eight feet straight up. 'Cept it wasn't a really big pigeon.

"Is that a . . . " I asked Lis.

"Yup," she said.

The red-tailed hawk flew off.

"Which way did it go?" I asked Lis.

"Over there."

So we ran over there to see if we could still see the hawk, thinking, "Go raptor! Go raptor! Eat pigeons! Go carnivore!"

We like hawks.

Yay!

There's one that likes to perch on top of the fence outside my window at werk. I love watching them.

But did you take its head in your hands and point it at the pigeons?

No, no. . . as the hawk actually lives outside, and is, y'know, alive and not overly skinny, I'm pretty sure that it actually can find pigeons on its own. . .

I couldn't help it, I had a flashback to The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.

*feeling ambivalent about hawks these days*

I like hawks, too. I also like pigeons, rabbits, mice, even rats and squirrels. I resolve this paradox by cheering each species on separately from all others. Otherwise, I end up canceling out my own good wishes! ("Go hawk! Go pigeon!", or just "Yea, nature!")

So now I say "tell the story about..." to you - do you remember our "pet" wild sparrow, Dim Spiro Sparrow, and the Sparrow Song of Arlington, Mid-1980's?

I do! I do! At least, I remember Dim Spiro Sparrow, and how he used to come back to visit. C'mon, Ian, tell us the story!
