I was making Lis an omelette, and I saw a bird flit by the window, and perch on the side of the house. I could only see its tail, and couldn't figure out what it was -- it looked vaguely familiar, but I couldn't quite place it. Then I heard, "taptap, taptaptaptaptaptaptap. . . " Fortunately, the woodpecker got bored before the house did. This is the first time I've been actually happy we have vinyl siding.

I didn't even know there were woodpeckers around here.

I've got a wood pecker, his real name is Leno ( cause I thought he was a Jay ) but we call him PeepPEEP. He's a rescue bird, his tree blew down in a storm last year before he even had real feathers.

He's getting his red head feather growth coming in now and is a hoot..
Charlie ( my sausage beagle boy ) taught him how to bark.

We don't have that many pileated woodpeckers (the Woody Woodpecker model) around here, but we have a fair number of small brown ones (downy woodpeckers?).

About Woodpeckers from Animal Speak

Well, it's strange enough that it caused me to go grab "Animal Speak" by Ted Andrews which is a book of animal, bird, and reptile symbolism. I've paraphrased the entry - pp. 206-207.

Woodpecker
keynote: the power of rhythm and discrimination
cycle of power: summer

"In the European folk tradition, the woodpecker was often considered a weather prophet., ti's drumming indicating forthcoming changes. It was even believed by some to be a thunderbird. In Babylonia, it was considered the ax of Isthtar and was associated with fertility. in the Greek tradition it occupied the throne of Zeus, considered sacred to this god of thunder. It was also considered the oracle of Mars, again because drumming was often used to accompany battles. ... In the Native American tradition it is a bird connnected to the heartbeat of the Earth itself. This drumming has many mystical connections, fron new life rhythms to applications of shapeshifting."

The red found in the head area of any woodpecker indicates a stimuation of the mental activities and the head chakra centers. It reflects a stimuation and wakening of new mental faculties. The digging in with the beak indicates increasing analysis. The sharp bill and long barbed tongue can be likened to the art of discrimination.

Some questions to ask yourself if a woodpecker shows up for you:
Are you looking at aspects of your life rationally? Are others around you not discriminating in their activities? Are you? Are you or others in your life just jumping into situations with little or no analysis?

Sometimes the woodpecker will show up just to stimualte new rhythms. Rhythm is a powerful way to affect physical energies. Woodpecker's appearance may reflect a need to drum some new changes and rhythms into yoru life.

The unique flight of the woodpecker indicates it will become increasingly important for you to follow your own rhythms and flight. The foundation is there.

Interesting. Much to think about. Especially on the first day of the year.
