Subject: [TBB] Making a minyan

Dear Friends,

This coming weekend is, of course, Memorial Day weekend, which calls to mind the famous question in the Mishnah:
from when do we go to the Cape? Shammai says, from Memorial Day weekend. Hillel says, Oy, the traffic! Better you should stay in town and help make a minyan -- and if not now, when? The Mishnah leaves the disagreement unresolved. But bear in mind that on the thousands of college campuses in America, you will not find a single Shammai Organization.

Hope to see you in shul, and a good holiday weekend to all.

Rick

Note for non-locals: "the Cape" is Cape Cod, the sticky-out part of Massachusetts, and a popular weekend getaway spot.

…and your grandmother says, What, you want to go in the North Atlantic in May? Are you crazy? You'll freeze. Stay in town, go to shul, maybe have some ice cream if it's warm.

What do you mean, "if it's warm"? I'm a Bostonian. Today, it was 40 degrees Farenheit (5 degrees C) and rainy. (And it's not going to get warmer or dryer all week.) Lis and I stopped for ice cream. And we were far from the only people there. Bostonians eat more ice cream when there's two feet of snow on the ground than any other Americans eat during the summer.

I've walked down Mass Ave. with a cone in the snow--but would your grandmother?

Wow. That is wonderful. :)

I didn't know you know Dennis and Rona ... they're coming to dinner this Shabbat, to visit with Larry Lennhoff. Do you know Larry, too?

I don't actually know them. They're just in charge of the shul mailing list.
