I should probably LJ-cut this, because it contains spoilers for Iolanthe, and some description of neat stuff in our production. Y'all, who are local, should come see our production on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, (8 pm) or Sunday (2 pm), and THEN read this. (Second floor of the MIT student center, in Salla la Puerto Rico.)

Okay, so there's a line in the first song the faries sing, "If you ask the special function of our never-ceasing motion/We reply without compunction that we haven't any notion."

Because of that, our faries are in never-ceasing motion. Specifically, wing-fluttering. Their wings are attached to their backs or necks and to their wrists, so they are constantly fluttering their arms which makes their wings flutter. It looks really cool. And vaguely eerie and unworldly -- not a bad job for a couple of yards of fabric and some elastic.

Lis overheard someone comparing it to the gills of fish -- a sort of "keep moving or die" thing. The faries are never still, even when they're still.

Now, we Peers are turned into faries at the very end of the show. And our costumes have capes on them. The idea was floated that, once we're fairies, we should start doing that wing-fluttery thing with our capes. I've been trying to do it, and some other people have, too -- but it's not actually easy.

It might have been cool to actually work on "How to Move Like A Fairy For Peers."

There are three or four fairies -- mainly the named ones who are main characters -- who do this really, really well -- their fluttering actually reflects their mood, so they flutter angrily, nervously, agitatedly, happily, or so forth. And since we got to watch the bits of the show that we're not in, we got to see them do it, so I feel like I've got a better idea of how to go about this than I did -- I watched people doing stuff during rehearsals, of course, but I didn't actually see people doing this with wings attached until dress rehearsal, so I didn't get just how cool it looks. And for most of dress rehearsal and for the performances, I'm not wearing glasses.

Hi Ian I've been looking all over lj to find out how to put something in memories after it has been posted. I wanted to put the secure elections petition and the info to help children in Iraq and Afghanistan in there so people can easily access it.

Wish I could come see you! Sounds so wonderful.
hugs
