Purim recap:
Feb. 23rd, 2013 10:27 pmFirst, the failure. When I was making the poppyseed filling, I was boiling it down, stirring it, then suddenly -- and I mean SUDDENLY, this whole thing took, like, five seconds -- hit the "hard crack" stage, and seized up, the spoon got stuck and I couldn't move it, and it started smelling like caramel, then burnt caramel, then just plain burnt. Seriously. Five seconds from slightly syrupy filling I was boiling down to solid burnt mass. Should have just stuck with honey rather than a mixture of honey and sugar -- I keep forgetting just how amazingly finicky sugar is.
However, the pizza hamentashen and the jalapeno jelly hamentashen came out PERFECTLY. I made about two dozen pizza ones -- of which we ate four at home -- and a dozen jalapeno jelly ones. And I brought a bottle of etrog liqueur that we bought when we were last in New York.
They were ALL big hits, and none of them are left. Most of the time, people took the jalapeno ones as a dare, and then were startled that they were actually GOOD -- not just a stunt. And also surprised that the pizza ones were good, too. I mean, they were expecting them to be okay, but they are GOOD.
One of the other congregants wrote parody songs for people, and she gave me a filk of "Some Nights", based on Chapter Six of the Megillah. She wrote most of it, but I finished off the last two verses, and performed it. And it went over well, too.
After the Megillah reading, I was hanging out with some of the kids, and two of them had made up their own The Doctor costumes -- not any of the existing ones, just their own variations. So I had to show them the photos from Arisia that I have on my phone, of the Tardis dress costume, the guy dressed as ALL the Doctors at once -- they're on Facebook if you haven't seen them. And I told them about "The Curse of Fatal Death", which they all want to see, now.
Also -- I feel like I should shadchen for my friend Eliana. She's about our age, and, while she's reasonably happy being single, I think it's such a waste that someone of such high dating potential isn't dating. She's of the short, squishy body type which is quite popular in my social group, and her undergraduate degree was in fashion design, and her Master's thesis was on HP Lovecraft, and she's the rabbi at Temple B'nai Brith. So -- to my geeky Jewishly-involved friends -- if you can think of someone who'd be a good match, we should do something about that. I'm pretty sure she's monogamous, and I THINK she's straight.
More importantly, I think we just need to start dragging her out to geeky events in general.
