This is in reference to a story that
sinboy posted, about how the people in Switzerland who voted an anti-Islamist law in are also generally anti-Semitic, and further refined by a conversation I was having in
theferrett's LJ.
As a Jew, I am ONLY comfortable in a secular, pluralistic society. I believe that any society that works with one specific group having a dominant role is going to eventually attempt to oppress some other group -- and that any time anyone oppresses ANYBODY, they'll eventually get around to oppressing the Jews.
Anybody.
Including Jews.
In modern Israel, the Haredi are currently oppressing the Jews. They forbid Jews from worshipping as they please; they deny Jews access to Jewish holy sites; they throw rocks at Jews who are going through certain neighborhoods.
The Haredi are Jewish.
My boss at Hebrew school moved to the United States for religious freedom. She was oppressed and unable to worship as a Jew in the way that she wanted to where she grew up. In Israel.
We are currently at the point that the Haredi have SO poisoned Judaism in Israel that Jews have to LEAVE Israel in order to worship as Jews.
The only reason that the Haredi don't attack "heretics" with pitchforks and torches is that they look down on manual labor like farming, and you're not allowed to carry fire on Shabbat. But they do spit on people, and throw rocks.
And they've got a disturbing amount of influence politically.
If ISRAEL will turn to oppressing Jews, then it seems obvious that ANY culture that doesn't dedicate itself to secularism and pluralism is going to oppress us.
