So -- the Republican leadership is falling to pieces trying to deal with the "Mark Foley talks dirty to underage boys" story. And I feel ambivalent about it.

On the one hand -- the folks that are selling our country down the river are falling to pieces. That's a good thing.

On the other hand -- this is really not all that relevant. I mean, yeah -- it sucks that we had a pedophile as the head of the Missing and Exploited Children thingy. Although, to be fair -- he probably was one of the most knowledgeable heads of that committee we've ever had. And the Republican leadership had to know about it, and didn't do anything about it.

But that's not the point. Frankly, a congresscritter schtupping underage boys is just not that relevant to my life. The Abramoff scandal is more important. And the suspension of habeas corpus, institutionalization of torture, broadening of police powers without court oversight, and all the rest of that is VASTLY more important.

But this is what finally got people's attention.

And, you know what? I'll take it.

If that's what we've got to work with, fine, that's what we'll work with. It's not the thing we SHOULD be paying attention to, but if we can use this to fix the things we should be paying attention to, fine.

And now I understand the Monica Lewinsky situation.

So, conservatives hated Clinton. For a number of reasons which make sense from their point of view. He stood in the way of changes they'd want to make, he promoted changes that they felt took the country in the wrong direction. I understand that. They genuinely felt that he was damaging the country.

And they were frustrated that nobody seemed to see it the same way they did.

So then, there's a sex scandal. Fine -- as far as they're concerned, it's not the IMPORTANT thing -- but, hell -- if that's what they've got and that's what people are finally paying attention to -- okay, they'll go with THAT.

Why did Republicans impeach Clinton over a blowjob? Because that's what they had to work with. I'm sure they'd rather have impeached him over something more substantive, but you go to impeachment hearings with the case you have, not the case you want.

And, fine. I want the Republicans to fail because the country realizes that a real good percentage of the powerful folks in the Republican party are corrupt and are taking the country in fascistic directions -- but, heck -- if the Republicans fail because they covered up for a pedophile, I'll take it.

(And for those who claim that the Democrats aren't much better -- the Democrats are nowhere near as effective at being corrupt.)
