The "where you've lived" thingy
Feb. 8th, 2005 01:26 pmJamaca Plain, Boston, 1974-1976. I have absolutely no memories of this apartment.
Acton, MA, for six months in 1976 and 1977. My earliest memories are here. I remember locking my mother out of the house one day, mostly accidentally, but then KEEPING the (screen) door locked, because I knew that I'd be in trouble when Mom got back inside. Mom punched through the screen and let herself in, and I remember thinking, "Wow. I didn't think of that. . . I probably should just have unlocked the door, shouldn't I have?" Not in quite as good grammar as that -- I was two. I also remember standing on the rug in the living room and spinning around until I fell over. Those are my earliest memories.
Somerville, MA (10 Malvern Ave), 1977-1980? My sister was born when we lived there. I never went to Somerville public schools -- I went to the Cambridge Frends School for kindergarten, first, and second grades, a Quaker-run Montesorri school.
Arlington, MA, (31 Surry Rd), 1980-1992. Obviously, Arlington is the town I consider my "hometown." We used to say, "It's a nice place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit there." It was, when I was growing up, a fairly boring town. And I mean that in the best possible sense. It was also a short bus ride from Harvard Square -- the 77 ran every fifteen minutes -- which, at the time, was interesting, so you could live somewhere nice and boring, and easily get to someplace interesting. I moved into the Arlington public school system in third grade, and they did very well by me. I'm rather pleased with my elementary and secondary education.
Then, my parents moved to Wayland, and I went to Brandeis.
Waltham, MA 1992-1996? Something like that. I was at 'Deis briefly, flunked out, and lived in various apartments around Waltham for the next few years. Often with
yehoshua, who will probably forgive me for that fact someday.
Medford, MA 1996-1999. Then I moved in with Lis in her apartment in Medford. She was renting the top apartment in a two-family from a retired Irish cop who was charging her well below market rents, because he liked her, basically. He had something like a half dozen daughters of his own, and he'd put every one of them through college. We were a little worried about how he'd feel about her boyfriend moving in, but he liked me nearly as much as he liked Lis, and was basically happy to have another guy around the house.
Melrose, MA 2000-Present. We got married, bought a house, and moved in on Odometer Day. It was 9:30 at night, we'd just moved our stuff in, and we looked at each other, and said, "We can find out if the Y2K bug destroyed the world TOMORROW. Right now, we're tired."
You'll note that I've lived within 495 (the outer ring road around Boston) my entire life. In fact, except for the six months in Acton, I've lived within 128 (the inner ring road) my entire life. Well, those six months, and a couple of months of summer camp. Which was in Vermont, so even THAT wasn't so far.
