Me: We have twenty-seven messages on the answering machine.

Lis: Yeah, so?

Me: So are you going to listen to them?

Lis: No.

Me: Are you avoiding anything?

Lis: The answering machine. I hate telephones.

Me: Well, I hate telephones, and answering machines, too. Why do we even HAVE one? I mean, twenty-seven people think they've gotten in touch with us, and they HAVEN'T, because we don't listen to our answering machine. If we're not going to listen to it, why do we have it?

Sailing.

We went out sailing on my grandfather's boat today.
We headed out with Nana, Papa, Nana's friend Rhoda, and my cousin Todd (who probably uses the boat as much as anybody -- I noticed that he had a key card of his own to get into the yacht club where we pick up the water taxi to get to the mooring).

Was fun. Lis got to use the jib sheets, and did well. Not just for a first time; she did well in absolute terms. She didn't try handling the mainsheet or the tiller, though. But she had fun.

We probably sailed around Marblehead Harbor for three or four hours, then Nana and Papa took us out for lunch at a sandwich shop downtown where our cousin Kate, Todd's sister, was working. Lis got a lobster roll, I got a Cornish pasty, which was very good. Then we went out for ice cream, and then headed home, stopping at the Swampscott library briefly to pick up a book that Lis wanted to check out.

I'm sunburned, because I've been real careless about sunscreen.

Lis's computer is apparently working again -- the drive isn't making the funny noise right now -- although we're watching it very carefully.

We just had a really good time.
