Okay, it's a little ratty-looking -- maybe a bit short on schach -- Dave took the branches and stuff he'd cleaned from the yard to the dump, and I'd kind of been thinking of using it for schach, but I never mentioned that to him, so I've been going around and pulling random other bits of vegetation from the ground and throwing it on top, which is more-or-less okay.

Still need to put in a table and chairs, but it's a sukkah!

For us non layman people. What exactly is a sukkah?

Sukkot is a holiday, mentioned in Lev 23:33, during which you built a sort of shack or booth, called a sukkah, and you decorate it, and you eat in it, and if the weather is nice, you can sleep in it, and you just generally celebrate. It's seven days long, but everybody liked it so much that they added another day, Sh'mini Atzeret, which means, sort of "eighth extra bit", to stretch it out one more day. The day after Sh'mini Atzeret is Simchat Torah, where you dance around with the Torah and generally party. (In Israel, Sh'mini Atzeret is the same day as Simchat Torah, but everywhere else, you get to do them both separately.) So it's a really upbeat week-plus a day or two.

Just to extend a bit what Xiphias said, of course because it's a Jewish thing there are all sorts of laws and customs about the materials to use to build the sukkah, what kind of roof it can have (the roof must be mostly vegetable matter with spaces in it so that one can see a bit of sky, thus the comments about bush trimmings), how much can be permanent and how much temporary, minimum size, maximum size, shape, and of course there are differing opinions about all of these...

wow - I am really impressed that you built a sukkah in the rain! I will be at the Bruce Springsteen fundraising concert all next week so I will not be able to celebrate. Well I am in Florida next week, Bruce is only one night.

I haven't had much traffic or comments on my blog yet so I spent alot of today in bed, sick, with my laptop, going to MIblogs and writing to people in Iraq. some wrote back on those blogs and one person went to my blog and posted a comment. That was gratifying.

Good Morning Ian

I put up a politically oriented post this morning that I'd love to get feedback on. My friends are not computer oriented. Could you ask yours to take a peek and comment if they would like?

Hope you and Lis are healthy again.

Drat, if I'd known you'd needed schach, I would have trimmed the bushes where we live for you.
