Yes. But I am an engineer. And my college has a student-accessible machine shop.

And I am so very tempted to build me one.

Xiphias, what's the minimum oven temperature one would need to bake a passable cake, anyhow?

Hotter than the insides of your computer should be.

Oh, certainly. The question boils down to whether the necessary insulation and cooling system around the outside of the oven is feasible or not. (Right now, I'm leaning towards "yes, but it has to be a pretty cool oven, and that 40mm fan on the side is not going to be quiet".)

What I wanna know is "can you somehow make a heat sink dump heat from the CPU into an oven?"

And then vent the oven heat out the side or something -- but use the oven as part of the cooling system for the computer.

Could you, in effect, use cake batter AS a heat sink?

Sadly, not really; see the bit at the bottom of this post.

Update on the calculations: the cooling is loud (an 8500RPM 40mm fan runs about 40dBa) but definitely in the range of feasible, even for a 350F oven; expect the outer surface of the oven to be about 10-15F above ambient air, which should be ok if you have a well-cooled case. Pulling 75W off the computer's power supply to run the oven may or may not work especially well, however.

If it helps, the EZBake Oven I had as a child baked its wee cakes with the heat generated by a 60-watt lightbulb.

EZ-Bake ovens trapped the heat from the light bulb, instead of dissapating it. And light bulbs get pretty hot -- ever burn your finger on one? To bake a cake, you need about 300 degrees F. You can probably get by with 250 for small cakes if you don't care about texture and have time to wait.

Thanks! The amount of power required if it's trapped is still useful, but having some confirmation of the temperatures I was getting from recipes is definitely good.

Alas, Ian, she is right.
Back to the original posting, I found http://www.mirabilis.ca/archives/001618.html which lists some other hoaxes on the site...

And I rather like http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/41/habicase.shtml

As it happens, I'm currently working my way through the first season of Rocky and Bullwinkle. The serial drama involves Rocky's cake recipe which turns out to be perfect rocket fuel.
