At work today, one of the waitstaff mentioned that, last night, when she asked K., who has been the regular night bartender at the Grill Bar since Louis moved upstairs to the Comm Lounge, for two Crown Royals, he gave her two glasses of Chambord.

I mean, I can vaguely understand what went through his brain -- a Kir Royale is champaigne and chambord. But, c'mon. Two glasses of raspberry liquer are NOT the same as two glasses of whiskey.

How come HE has the full time position as night bartender at the Grill Bar, and I just pick up shifts when people are on vacation?

Who knows?

Speaking of bar tending, do any of your local want ads mention any VFW or American Legion posts, or Elks, Eagles, or Moose fraternal organizations in need of a bartender?

Even if they don't have listings in the paper, you can certainly try door to door knocking at each of the posts or lodges in your area. Considering their networks, by asking at one of each, they could probably tell you if any of their other local posts or lodges are in need of a bartender.

Just my $.02 contribution.

They generally hire from within the organization, or related organizations. For instance, VFW and American Legion bartending positions go entirely to veterans. But I can look at some of the service organizations.

I almost hate to say it--'specially since it was my *mother's* suggestion to *me* after I got my New York State bar tending license (which I never bothered to do anything with, and, at this point, I'm so out of practice that I would have to retake the entire course rather than just renewing)--but, well, how about bar mitzvas and weddings? Sure, it sucks, but if you get in with a couple of caterers, or give your name to synagogues and churches, you might get a few bites. Oh, and a lot of those Jews in Brookline, Newton and Sharon have big houses--they might be rich enough to hire you for private parties if they see you somewhere else first.

Sure, it's not a permanent gig by any means, but it may get you some extra cash. Just a thought. Good luck!

Is there anyway you could have the staff that have mentioned how much they like having you work the grill bar talk to the manager about how nice it is to have you working when you fill in? Maybe there could be some shuffling of work stations.

I was under the impression that you could also make a Kir royale with champagne and creme de cassis.

You can. Frankly, once you're mixing things together, creme de cassis and chambord are fairly interchangable -- black currant liqueur and raspberry liqueur are more alike than they are different.
