And you know why? It's not just because, well, science fiction fans have THOUGHT about aliens more than most people.

No, it's because, at a science fiction convention, you can expect that a shomer n'geiah Orthodox Jew will talk to a leather-clad dominatrix and someone dressed in Regency garb. As friends. About hobbit pornography.

There was an old Phil Foglio "Phil and Dixie" cartoon about this sort of thing. An alien lands and the only people comfortable talking to it are people who play role-playing games.

Makes sense to me. If you play RPGs you have an ability to play in a new world view down to different laws of physics, without having to internalize it as your own.

After discreetly checking that the person in question is of the same sex as they are. And identifies as such.

Dude, I've not only been in that conversation, I've been two different people in it. At different times, of course. I'm not THAT fond of talking to myself. :)

This cracks me up, as we're headed to Shore Leave this weekend. With our Orthodox friend. Who may or may not know the above. :-)

You know, I resemble that comment...I seem to remember this one Arisia.... ;-) But, seriously, I haven't been shomer n'giah since my freshman year of high school--although, I did cash in on the concept at Brandeis when Really Slimy Guys(TM) were bothering me. :-)

Hmmm...then again, I haven't met too many other mostly-orthodox jews who are also SCA members...maybe I should redefine as "conservadox," or "orthotive" or something?

Oh, and Hi! I now have an LJ, too! :-)
